Brooklyn – For several years, New York has experienced a steady outflow of residents to other states. New data from the U.S. Census Bureau reveals the migration trends for 2023.

The data estimates that 481,544 individuals left New York for other parts of the U.S., with many opting for states offering warmer weather and different political climates.

Florida emerged as the leading destination, attracting around 71,138 former New Yorkers. However, 24,749 people moved from Florida to New York, leading to a net migration loss of 46,389 residents to the Sunshine State.

This trend is not new. In fact, Florida has consistently drawn more New Yorkers than most other states. In 2022 alone, over 91,000 New Yorkers moved there.

Close behind Florida, neighboring states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania ranked second and third in terms of popularity. An estimated 55,926 New Yorkers relocated to New Jersey, while approximately 42,637 chose Pennsylvania. Despite this, there was still a net outflow of 15,452 to New Jersey and 15,034 to Pennsylvania after accounting for the individuals who moved back to New York.

Rounding out the top five states attracting New Yorkers were California and Texas. The data shows 35,062 people moved from New York to California and 29,610 headed to Texas. But after subtracting those who migrated from these states to New York, the net loss amounted to 3,965 to California and 10,654 to Texas.
